THE ART OF THE FRAME

15 artists and one frame maker (me) collaborated for an experiment of sorts; reverse engineering a framed work of art.

The project's premise is simply the reversal of the now customary process of having created (or buying) an artwork free of any idea of how it would be framed and then taking it to be framed afterward.  In this case each piece starts first with a frame that is custom designed and built for each artist, based not on a particular piece of art but on that particular artist's body of work and life as an artist.

It is through the reversal of this process that I was able to explore the questions of inspiration in regards to my part as the frame maker either setting the stage at the beginning of the artistic process or help bring context and cohesiveness at the end of one.  My role here being at the forefront of a layered creative process in these collaborations and the position of the frame and frame maker as an engaged aspect of the artistic process rather than a footnote or separate interchangeable attribute of the work.
